About Tom

Writer Publisher Coach Guide

I have been associated with the Runners’ Guide for more than 30 years. My contribution to road running was recognised in 2006 when I was inducted into the Runner’s World Hall of Fame. Since then I have written and published sporting guides for open water swimming and cycling. I have written a history of the Comrades Marathon, two novels and have been a regular contributor to several magazines and publications. Besides my own work I have published books written by Don Oliver, John Cameron-Dow, Dr Lindsay Weight and Rory Steyn.

I was the first Run/Walk franchisee in South Africa and coached many top executives to achieve lives of balanced health and fitness. As a motivator on the Comrades Marathon Panel Talks I helped hundreds achieve their medal ambitions. In earlier years I was on the coaching team of a Comrades Marathon winner and understand the mechanics of elite performance.

As a runner I finished the Comrades Marathon five times, and have run over 200 marathons. When I turned 50, I ran a marathon on every continent during that year in celebration.

I have been a Hospice counsellor for bereavement as well as terminal patients. I am in lifelong rehabilitation, and have helped many who struggle, to overcome the curse of alcohol.

I graduated from the University of Witwatersrand with a commercial degree in accountancy and law. I have also completed short courses at Cape Town University in creative writing, digital marketing and investment management.
